FFP might help Liverpool revisit a deal for Chelsea star Levi Colwill
Liverpool FC’s summer interest in Levi Colwill ended with the 20-year-old signing a new deal at Chelsea after coming back from his extremely successful loan spell at Brighton and Hove Albion.
However, a domino effect might see Liverpool potentially revisit a deal for Colwill. Very recently, Everton and Nottingham Forest stood sanctioned with charges for Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules breaches. The triage of the Toffees, Forest and Chelsea have spent big in recent seasons, and the only reason Mauricio Pochettino’s side enjoyed some leeway was because they generate more income compared to the other two clubs involved.
In the previous summer, Todd Boehly’s team offloaded players worth hundreds of millions to finance an extensive rebuild. However, the closure of an amortization loophole has curtailed their ability to spend freely this time, potentially necessitating another round of player sales. (FourFourTwo)
To make sales, and also showcase them as “pure profits” in the books, the Blues might have to do away with a few academy graduates, and that is why Conor Gallagher has seen himself extensively linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge despite being their best player by far this campaign.
Colwill to the Reds?
With the same logic of a pure profit, Levi Colwill‘s sale will also help Chelsea maintain a better image on paper when it comes to the PSR rules. Keeping this in mind, it would not come totally out of the blue for Liverpool to revisit a potential deal for the central defender.
Throughout the last campaign at Sussex, Colwill displayed a great level of maturity and versatility putting in a shift as both, a centre-back and a left-back. Upon his return though, he has not been able to showcase similar levels of performance, but that is also considering that the squad as a whole has not been up to the mark even though there have been glimpses of his true potential.
A move to Liverpool might help him realise his talent to its full extent. The Reds are short on defensive reinforcements; more so after the long-term injury to Joel Matip. Jarell Quansah has stepped up brilliantly in Matip’s absence and Joe Gomez has been reliable as well, but we must also consider that Virgil van Dijk will not be around forever, and it is only wise for the club to seek a long-term replacement.

A long-term replacement might come in the form of Colwill, but he remains bound to cost a bomb for sure. His deal at Chelsea now lasts until 2029 (Transfermarkt) and any power dynamics in negotiations lie with Chelsea. However, they would also be desperate to make a sale, so expect some leeway in negotiations, but not a lot. Either way, he won’t come cheap but the Reds surely need reinforcements. Homegrown quota too. Time will tell whether or not the Reds make a move for the player, but the developments are surely to keep an eye out for.
