Turkish journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu claimed that Trabzonspor have made an official offer for Liverpool defender Nat Phillips during the summer

Sports journalist Yagiz Sabuncuoglu revealed that the Turkish club Trabzonspor have made an official offer for Liverpool defender Nat Phillips. Phillips spent last season on loan at Celtic during the first half of the season and later at Cardiff City.

The 27-year-old is a surplus to requirement at the club but Liverpool fans respect his contribution during their previous struggles. Under former legendary manager Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool faced a dire moment when their defence lacked sufficient depth during the 2020-21 season. After his man-of-the-match performance on debut, Klopp called him ‘a monster in the air’.

Phillips played a crucial role for Liverpool to qualify for the Champions League competition, finishing third in the Premier League. Phillips has spent most of his tenure at Liverpool on loan spells since earning a promotion from the Reds’ prestigious academy.

Sabuncuoglu used his official X account to reveal that Trabzonspor have made an official offer to sign Phillips permanently. The Daily Mail reported that Liverpool values the 27-year-old at £8 million as they seek to sell him.

Phillips is currently serving his last year in the Liverpool contract and could depart as a free agent next summer. Liverpool have enjoyed selling the academy players who are not part of their plans to bolster their revenue.

They work under a restricted budget that requires them to use the transfer market wisely to maintain competition with high-spending rivals. Liverpool have sold many former academy players for a decent price in the past to accomplish a healthy net spending.

Meanwhile, the Reds seek defensive options themselves to compete with the current senior team players and eventually succeed them. Liverpool conceded many cheap goals last season that eventually cost them major trophies, something they cannot afford to repeat.

While Phillips accomplished many good things at Liverpool, his time at Anfield is nearing its inevitable end. Nevertheless, Liverpool fans will remember his contributions when they desperately needed someone to step up.
