Liverpool set to battle Manchester City for the signature of 29-year-old superstar Pep Guardiola once said ‘has everything’

Liverpool wants to beat Manchester City to sign Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich after their successful purchase of Joao Palhinha
Liverpool plans to outsmart Manchester City to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Joshua Kimmich after they sealed the Joao Palhinha deal. Kimmich could leave as Bayern prefer to sell him now than let him go as a free agent next season.
The 29-year-old has served the German club loyally while establishing himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe. Kimmich recently represented Germany in the Euro 2024 and assisted in the goal during their eventual 2-1 loss to Spain.
The German international enjoyed an immense rise in reputation after establishing himself as a regular first-team player under then-Bayern manager Pep Guardiola. Kimmich started his senior-team career as a right-back and eventually shifted into the midfield due to his all-round playmaking abilities. In fact, Guardiola said about Kimmich – ” ‘I just love this kid. He has everything.“

The 29-year-old has also played as a make-shift centre-back when required by his team, displaying immense versatility in his game. The German international’s defensive prowess, hard work, and tenacity combined with his technical and creative qualities are a big asset.
According to Express, Liverpool can beat Man City to sign Kimmich from Bayern after they secured Palhinha’s signing from Fulham. Palhinha’s addition combined with Kimmich’s contract situation makes him a surplus to requirement for the German club next season.
Meanwhile, Liverpool lacks depth in their defensive midfield position with Wataru Endo and Stefan Bajcetic as the natural options currently. While Endo produced a good season since signing for Liverpool last summer, he has struggled and needs strong competition.
At the same time, Bajcetic struggled with recurring injuries as his young career needed better supervision of his game time. The Spaniard could benefit from the game time management, allowing him to nurture and prolong his career.

Kimmich is playing in the peak year of his career and could establish himself as a first-team regular immediately. However, Liverpool usually prefers a younger option and his wage demand could become a major obstacle if the Reds decide to negotiate a deal.
