New Liverpool head coach Arne Slot asserted that Darwin Nunez has an important role to play under him next season

Liverpool boss Arne Slot rejected any potential departure of Darwin Nunez during the summer, asserting his importance for the team. Nunez faced severe criticism last season under legendary manager Jurgen Klopp when the club suffered a sudden dip in form.

Liverpool lost both the Premier League and the Europa League due to their unfortunate anticlimactic end to the last season. While the whole attacking department failed to contribute, Nunez’s struggle gained extra attention from the media and social media.

Some of the criticism had weightage and the intention of being constructive in nature while most involved vile hateful rhetoric. The Uruguay international retaliated by blocking many Liverpool-related engagement accounts and deleting the club-related pictures from his Instagram account.

Money-driven influencers expertly run these engagement accounts, impersonating genuine Liverpool supporters and negatively influencing actual fans on social media. The majority of their content is controversial and meant to create interactions while lacking empathy or even logic to generate income.

Nunez’s actions fueled transfer rumours after Klopp departed from the club as many awaited Slot’s impression of the Uruguayan forward. The 45-year-old head coach enjoyed a reputation for bringing the best out of the players he worked with, in past.

Speaking to the press conference (via the Mirror), Slot asserted that Nunez has a key role to play for Liverpool. He said:

“I just told him that, from what I saw, he played multiple positions and what positions – or position – I see him playing. I assume he’ll fit really well into this playing style because I like him. I’ve told him that already, he’s one of the players I’ve spoken to. He might have had some struggles with finishing opportunities, but he came a lot of times into those positions. I think he could fit in really well, but it’s normal at a club like this that there are many more players who could play in his position. It’s clear for him which position he’s going to play. It’s clear for me as well and me telling him made it clear for him.”

Nunez has displayed his lethal finishing for Uruguay since joining his international team for the friendlies and the Copa America. Despite his struggles with finishing and offsides, the 25-year-old enjoyed a decent outing with the Reds last season.

Nunez contributed immensely with goals and assists while his hard work, determination and overall quality influenced Liverpool’s attack constantly. Slot’s faith in the Uruguayan further proves that he is still the main man at the club despite the transfer rumours.
