Liverpool earmark Adrien Rabiot as an alternative to Martin Zubimendi

Liverpool are eyeing a blockbuster deal for Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, but the Spanish side are in no mood to lose their 25-year-old talisman. While the midfielder is keen to move to Anfield, it remains to be seen how the negotiations and events play out in the coming days.

With just weeks left before the 2024 summer transfer window closes, the Reds cannot afford to go through another Moises Caicedo situation. While we did eventually strike gold with Wataru Endo last summer, missing out on a top target is not a good look for a club of Liverpool’s calibre.

But then, given the dynamic nature of the sport, it makes sense that Richard Hughes and Co. have contingencies in place. The same is the case regarding Zubimendi, with Liverpool earmarking an alternative option if needed.

According to Football Insider, one of the alternatives Liverpool have identified is Adrien Rabiot, who is currently a free agent after leaving Juventus earlier this summer. The French midfielder, who played a crucial role for Didier Deschamps’ France squad at Euro 2024, brings a wealth of experience to the table. At 29, Rabiot would add a seasoned presence to Liverpool’s midfield, much like the recent acquisition of Wataru Endo late in last summer’s transfer window.

Preliminary discussions with Rabiot have reportedly taken place, signalling Liverpool’s intent to have a backup plan should the Zubimendi negotiations not materialize as hoped. Rabiot’s availability on a free transfer makes him an attractive option, especially given his extensive experience at the highest levels of European football.

Given that Rabiot and Zubimendi have different skill sets, we will take this report with a pinch of salt. Liverpool need to bring in the right player this summer and not just make up the numbers. While Rabiot might be a free agent, he will not come cheap.

The Frenchman could ask for as much as €45m in wages over a three year period, making him one of the best earners at Anfield. It is difficult to see the Reds break their salary structure to accommodate a player who is far from their first choice.

Despite the ongoing talks, there is a growing expectation that the deal could be completed before the transfer deadline on August 31st. However, Liverpool, ever mindful of the complexities that can arise in such high-profile negotiations, are exploring alternatives should the Zubimendi deal fall through. Surely, we can do better than Rabiot.
