Aston Villa identify Liverpool star Joe Gomez as a potential replacement for Diego Carlos

As the summer transfer window draws to a close, Aston Villa and Liverpool find themselves in contrasting positions. Villa have been highly active, bringing in eight new players to bolster their squad, while Liverpool have had a quieter window, with minimal movement in both incomings and outgoings. However, with only a few weeks remaining until the transfer deadline, both clubs appear to be headed for a collision course.

Aston Villa may soon be in the market for a new centre-back, with Diego Carlos reportedly linked with a potential move to Fulham. Should Carlos depart, Villa is expected to seek a top-tier replacement, and Liverpool’s Joe Gomez has emerged as a prime candidate. According to The Telegraph, Gomez is one of the defenders Villa are considering.

Gomez’s future at Liverpool was considered uncertain, and he was also included in a deal that would have seen Anthony Gordon arrive at Anfield. However, the move fell apart. Nevertheless, Aston Villa remains keen on the versatile defender.

If Carlos leaves, Villa will likely accelerate their pursuit of Gomez, who would bring Premier League experience and versatility to their backline. The 25-year-old is on a shortlist that also includes Dutch defender Lutsharel Geertruida, a player that the Reds are also keen on.

For Liverpool, selling Gomez could result in a significant financial gain. However, he is also a versatile player who can clearly play anywhere in the backline. This is significant and outweighs the need for the Reds to cash in. While Aston Villa can also offer him UEFA Champions League football, there is little reason for Gomez to leave Anfield.
