Liverpool target Piero Hincapie is ready to leave Bayer Leverkusen this summer

Liverpool FC’s pursuit of defensive reinforcements this summer has brought Bayer Leverkusen’s Piero Hincapié back into the spotlight. According to reports from Sky Germany via Florian Plettenberg on X, the 22-year-old Ecuadorian is open to a move this summer in search of more regular first-team football. This development could align perfectly with Liverpool’s ongoing search for a new central defender.

The Reds have been tracking Hincapié for some time, with a potential move being discussed as early as January. Although Leverkusen rebuffed those advances, the current transfer window presents a renewed opportunity for Liverpool to secure the talented young defender.

Richard Hughes spoke about the Reds adapting to opportunities in the summer and we sense just one opening up regarding Hincapie. After all, a left-sided centre-back who can also play out wide if needed is something the Reds can do with.

At just 22 years old, Hincapié has already made a significant impact in European football. Last season, he played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s unbeaten league and cup double campaign, making 43 appearances. His versatility as a naturally left-sided centre-back who can also operate as a left-back makes him an attractive option for Liverpool, particularly with the potential departures of Sepp van den Berg and Joe Gomez.

Van den Berg appears to be nearing the exit door, while Gomez’s future at Anfield also came into question following reports of a proposed swap deal involving Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon. If Gomez were to leave, Liverpool would need a versatile replacement capable of filling multiple roles in the backline—a role Hincapié is well-suited to.

While Hincapié fits the profile Liverpool are seeking, prying him away from Leverkusen won’t come cheap. The Ecuadorian does not have a release clause in his contract, which means any move would likely require a substantial financial outlay. His contract at the German champions also runs until 2027, giving them leverage when it comes to negotiations. Several teams have made enquiries, but it remains unclear if Liverpool are one of them.

With Liverpool’s current defensive situation and the impending contract expiration of Virgil van Dijk, securing a player like Hincapié could be a strategic move for the Reds as they look to strengthen their squad for the future. His youth, versatility, and proven track record in Europe make him a valuable target as Liverpool aims to maintain their defensive solidity in the coming seasons.

Hincapie is a no-nonsense defender often compared to Argentine star Cristian Romero. He has the potential to develop into a leading star and would add more South American flavour to the diverse Liverpool roster. Hincapie could be a defining player for Liverpool in the Arne Slot era, and it remains to be seen how the Reds will now respond to this opportunity.
