Liverpool’s quest to sign French wonderkid Kylian Mbappe has received a slight boost, after the player told Spanish publication Marca, that he “doesn’t know” if he will be at Monaco next season.

The Reds have targeted Mbappe and have reportedly had two bids including a €100m bid (Liverpool Echo) rejected by Monaco already. They are willing to offer huge money, to sign the 18-year old.

However, Real Madrid are the firm favourites to sign him. When Los Blancos set their sights on a player, they usually get them. But Liverpool would like to see themselves as the front-runners to secure Mbappe’s signature, should he decide to move to the Premier League.

When asked by Marca if he would be at Monaco next season, he replied:

“I do not know if I will stay.”

We have followed Mbappe’s progress for many years, and hope that our long-standing interest will work in our favour.

We will have a very tough task though, to beat Real Madrid. Our only hope is that the player decides to reject Real’s interest, due to the competition for places at the club. Playing in such a high-pressure environment at the age of 18 could be detrimental to his progress.

However, Mbappe is a confident man. He would believe he is good enough to make it to the Real Madrid starting line-up. Zinedine Zidane has even given him assurances that he would go straight into the side.

The Kop Times Verdict

Anything other than a move to Madrid would be a surprise for Mbappe. The other option, of course, is that he stays at Monaco for another year. Mbappe is settled in the Principality and it may be a more intelligent career move to stay put for now.

Mbappe rose to everyone’s attention last season, in a sensational break-through campaign. He was a key part of a Monaco side which achieved great success, playing a thrilling brand of football. Coach Leonardo Jardim led the side to the semi-finals of the Champions League and the Ligue1 title.

Some think that Liverpool’s pursuit of Mbappe is purely to show that we are chasing the very best. The deal may seem unlikely but it is a question of whether we are willing to break the bank for the purchase of the young superstar!
