German Reports: Liverpool Tried Signing Bayern Munich Star This Summer (Not Sanches)

Liverpool were one of the four clubs that had made inquiries about the availability of Bayern Munich star Thomas Muller this summer, as per the reports from German news outlet Sport Bild.

Muller, since his debut in 2008, has been Bayern’s first choice attacker but all has changed since the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti at the Allianz Arena. Muller has been scoring more than 20 goals a season for Bayern in the past four seasons, but endured a difficult season last time out.

Managing 42 appearances in all competitions, Muller recorded his worst ever goal-scoring tally after he only managed 9 goals last season. Even in his debut season as a regular starter, he scored 19 goals. With the likes of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery wreaking havoc alongside Robert Lewandowski, Muller only played 20 full games and this sparked a number of rumours of his potential exit.

Liverpool, in particular, had a firm interest in the German, but as soon as they realised that he was not for sale, a move for Mohamed Salah was plotted. Muller is a versatile player and just like Roberto Firmino, he doesn’t really have a fixed position; he can be deployed anywhere in the attacking third.

Muller was recently left out of Bayern Munich’s squad which thrashed Werder Bremen last month, and expressing his grief, Muller said that he didn’t know what his coach wanted from him.

“I don’t know exactly which qualities the coach wants to see,” Muller told ARD (as quoted by ESPN). “But mine seem not to be 100 percent in demand.”

Ancelotti, however, cleared the air by suggesting that starting Thiago Alcantara in place of the German was a tactical decision and nothing else.  As quoted by Goal, he said:

“We tried to plan the game using the wide areas more and to have more possession in the middle. For this reason Thomas didn’t start the game.

“He went in during the second part of the game and did well. It was only a technical decision.”

It is the first time Muller has expressed his unhappiness and his national compatriot, Sami Khedira was was left stunned as well.

“I think this is the first time he has announced he is unhappy [with being benched] – and it is a credit to him, that he always aims for the maximum,” he told Bild (as quoted by Metro).

“I am not his agent and not his dad, but I think you don’t sell someone like Thomas Muller. Carlo Ancelotti and the Bayern bosses know that.”

It does seem like all is not well between Muller and Ancelotti and according to latest reports from the Mirror, our rivals Arsenal and Chelsea are plotting a summer move for the German international.
