Authenticity Of The News Regarding Liverpool’s €100m Defender Chase Under Scrutiny

Liverpool might be interested in Dayot Upamecano, the young French defender from RB Leipzig but there could be a lot of confusion regarding just where the news is actually coming from.

It was reported earlier this week, that the 18-year-old has been rising up the ranks at Leipzig after his move from sister club Red Bull Salzburg and the defender was a target for us

which was claimed by the German publication, the Bild.

However, Football 365 did a lot of snooping around to find out just where this news story came out from and that has led to a major concern about the authenticity of the report.

Scooping through a number of pages from the Bild, it seems that they are not the ones who have reported this move and rather it was credited to Spiegel.

The actual quote from the Bild report states (via Football 365):

“The French interior defender is to have an exit clause of over 100 million euros in his contract running until 2021 next summer.

“If RB misses the international business, however, it should be reduced. This is reported by the ‘Spiegel’ with reference to the ‘Football Leaks’ disclosure database.

“Upamecano costs 100 million euros!”

Major Flags In The Upamecano Story

Looking at the quotes, there are a couple of major issues that crop up. Firstly, it isn’t the Bild that reported it, so we cannot be sure that the Germans know exactly what is going on with the French defender.

The second point is that even Football Leaks has been named as the source for the story and we all know that they aren’t the most reliable when it comes to transfers. However, they sure are great when it comes to leaking out jerseys of clubs.

This might just be another shot in the dark from one of the transfer related sites to get one on some of the other sites. While we do have issues with the defence and need reinforcements, the youngster is not the answer and his release clause is really ludicrous, to say the least.

Upamecano might be a player for the future but at the moment, we do have a better defender in Joe Gomez who knows the league well too and is getting better with each game.
