Liverpool Remain Interested Along With Newcastle To Sign This Spaniard From Primeira Liga – Reports

Liverpool have been linked with a move for former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas, according to ESPN. The Spaniard has been at Portuguese club FC Porto for the last two years after putting an end to his long association with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

The 36-year-old was a regular at the Portuguese club but in the recent games, he has been relegated to the bench, with Jose Sa taking the place under the sticks. That has prompted rumours of a move out of the club as Casillas looks to find a club for regular football. His contract expires at the end of the season and Casillas may look to find a club that matches his desire.

There are reports that Liverpool are interested in picking the experienced ‘keeper up but may have competition from fellow Premier League side Newcastle United.

But, is he the answer to Liverpool’s woes? Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius are the incumbent options for Jurgen Klopp. The duo, with due regards, has failed to make the position their own, with some inconsistent performances.

For all the striking prowess that plays enthralling football up front, our team has been plagued by problems at the back. Klopp would welcome the arrival of a strong ‘keeper to give him that comfort between the sticks.

Having said that, his problems run deeper as the defenders are feeling the heat of attacking waves from the opposition. This could be attributed to the failure of the defensive midfield area, which has failed to protect the back line better.

Klopp tried to have Emre Can and Jordan Henderson in that role, but neither was able to nail down that role. The Reds have already shipped 16 goals in the Premier League this season and look vulnerable in almost every match.

Having someone like Casillas in goal is a huge boost – I’ve no qualms about it. In fact, I would go ahead and say that the presence of Casillas would make the team sturdier. But, that’s not the elixir that would solve Liverpool’s problems overnight. The malaise runs deeper and lets hope Klopp sets his mind on addressing that!
