Gianluigi Donnarumma is the future when it comes to Italian goalkeepers and the AC Milan shot-stopper is the undisputed favourite to claim the number one spot once the legendary Gianluigi Buffon retires. The 19-year-old has been impressive for the Italian giants ever since he broke into the side but he has been linked with a move away from the capital from the start of the current season.
A number of top clubs have been linked with a big-money move for the Italian youngster who is arguably the best young goalkeeper in the world but recent odds from Ladbrokes suggests that Liverpool are joint-favourites to sign the 19-year-old, along with La Liga giants Real Madrid, who are both 2/1 favourites.
As quoted by Daily Star, Alex Apati of Ladbrokes stated:
“If the rumours are anything to go by, Donnarumma will be looking for a new club this summer and the latest odds suggest it’s Liverpool who’ll fancy their chances of striking a deal.”
The other clubs who made it into the top five for Donnarumma include PSG who are at 5/2, Arsenal at 4/1 and Juventus at 9/2.
Out of the above list, Madrid, Liverpool, PSG and Arsenal could all do with a new goalkeeper but are we really going to sign the highly-rated Italian star?
Looking into our current team, Simon Mignolet has been frozen out and will be looking for a new club in the summer. The Belgian has been replaced by Loris Karius and the German has actually done well since becoming our first-choice keeper.
Even in the 2-1 loss to Manchester United, Karius commanded the box, even though he could not do much to stop the two goals we conceded.
The other keeper in our team, Danny Ward, does not seem to be developing as well as we would have liked him to, and it is surprising that Klopp did not let him leave in the winter window on a loan deal.
However, Donnarumma would not come on the cheap and this deal does look unlikely given that we already have a quality young keeper in Karius. The German just needs our backing and has already grown this season in a short time.
Instead of pursuing a deal for the Italian ace, we should instead be looking to spend the money to get more reinforcements in the defence and midfield, as we could lose Emre Can on a free transfer. Hence, the Donnarumma deal looks kind of off at the moment.
