Virgil van Dijk

Steven Gerrard has claimed that Virgil van Dijk has actually helped four players get better since his arrival in the winter window.

The Dutchman has put in some commanding performances for the club, such as the one in the 3-0 win over Manchester City in the first leg of our Champions League quarter-finals and Gerrard believes that Van Dijk has been a blessing to the other defenders in the side.

Speaking to BT Sport (h/t Express) after our 2-1 win over City in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-final, the former captain of the Reds said

:

“I think this Liverpool team, with the arrival of Van Dijk, have found a big piece in the jigsaw.

“They’ve always looked dangerous going forward under Jurgen since he walked in the door. They’ve always looked threatening. But they’ve had a weakness at the back.

“The arrival of Van Dijk has had such a big lift on everyone around him. He’s lifted Lovren, he’s helping the two full-backs out immensely and I think he’s even helping the goalkeeper.”

Lovren was immense in the 2-1 win over Pep Guardiola’s side and the Reds will be looking to achieve a similar feat such as the one in 2005.

We did win the Champions League with Rafa Benitez and Gerrard in 2005 and hopefully, Van Dijk can help Jurgen Klopp and Dejan Lovren pick up the trophy this time around.
