Done – Emre Can completes free transfer but Juventus set to pay a staggering £14m

Emre Can has moved to Italian champions Juventus on a free transfer, according to the Liverpool Echo. The Old Lady will pay Emre Can a staggering £14m signing-on fee after signing a 4-year deal with the Italian giants. The German featured for us in the Champions League final but could not help us win the tournament.

The former Bayer Leverkusen man had suffered a back injury during the final months of the season and his final appearance was the loss against Real Madrid.

Can signed for us from Leverkusen for £9.75million in 2014 and did pretty well under Jurgen Klopp, however, the club and the player could not finalise a new contract. Can’s contract has expired and had been linked with a move to Juve for a long time.

The 24-year-old scored 4 goals and provided 4 assists for us in all competitions and could have become one of the best for Liverpool in the Premier League era had he continued his growth under Klopp.

The German certainly has potential and it certainly feels big to lose such a player on a free transfer but that is how Juve do their business as they have a history of signing players on the cheap.

There is a silver lining to all this, however, as we already have signed Fabinho and Naby Keita for our midfield this season. Even with Can leaving, our midfield does seem to be strong.

If the new pair plays to its potential, we might not even miss Can all that much. The German, even for all his contract-related delays, was a professional, and always gave it his all. Can deserves a good career whichever club he plays for.

Good luck Emre Can!
