Liverpool’s plan to sign attacker for £12m has come under threat as Premier League rivals enter the race

Xherdan Shaqiri is wanted by former manager Mark Hughes, who is currently at Southampton, according to Ian McGarry as he revealed the news on the Transfer Window Podcast (h/t Daily Star

).

Shaqiri was relegated with Stoke City last season and has been linked with a return to the Premier League with Liverpool but McGarry believes the Swiss could be tempted to Southampton with the prospect of regular game time.

“There’s interest from Southampton, where of course he might consider because he would play more regularly.”

The expert also shared just how much Shaqiri would earn at Liverpool and expected the player to be available for a fee going up to £12m in add-ons.

“His wages are not that high either, but I suspect he would be paid around £100,000 to £120,000-a-week at Anfield.”

Duncan Castles also shared his view on the deal, suggesting that Southampton have been pushing hard to get the player.

However, Castles was quick to add that we need to strengthen the attack since we were lucky that none of our attackers picked up long-term injuries last season.

Shaqiri has been one of the bright spots for Switzerland in the ongoing World Cup so far. The 26-year-old has scored one goal and provided an assist for the European side.

While the Swiss would be a great option for us to have, McGarry is right in saying that Shaqiri would receive more playing time at Southampton.

We already have the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino

leading the attack and Shaqiri would find it tough to replace the trio next season.

Shaqiri would be a great option to have on the bench but ultimately, the decision will come down to him.
