Former Liverpool starlet reveals why he left club despite contract offer

Sergi Canos

Former Liverpool youngster Sergi Canos has explained why he left the side, despite being offered a bumper deal to stay.

The youngster signed for us from Barcelona and had just one proper season with the first-team, before joining Brentford on loan.

The 21-year-old signed for Norwich City in 2016, before rejoining Brentford permanently at the start of 2017.

Canos claimed that training with some of the first-team players at Liverpool was amazing. The 21-year-old was interviewed by the Guardian and said:

“If you get told that in the next months you are going to train with Luis Suarez, Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers as a manager – you take it.”

The former Red revealed that the club offered him a five-year contract but he wanted to play first-team football and didn’t want to go out on loan any more.

“After Christmas I took the decision I didn’t want to sign a new contract with Liverpool. They offered me five years more but I didn’t want to. I didn’t want to be one more; I wanted to be important and I didn’t want to go on loan again.

“To sign for five more years at Liverpool, it meant that my career was going to depend on Liverpool, them making decisions for me.”

The Spaniard believes that he can help his Championship side make a charge for the Premier League as they missed out last season.

It is refreshing to see a youngster trying to make a name for himself and prioritizing regular football. However, Canos could have torn it up under Klopp had he decided to stay just a little longer.
