Liverpool’s Champions League group under investigation for match-fixing

L’Equipe (h/t Liverpool Echo) has claimed that UEFA has informed French authorities to investigate match-fixing allegations during the Champions League group game between Paris Saint-Germain and Red Star Belgrade.

The two clubs are in our Champions League group, along with Italian side Napoli. The report

adds that a senior Red Star employee had tried to bet €5m on the Serbian side losing by five goals.

The report claims that UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin and only a few close associates know about the investigation, with French national finance prosecutor (PNF) being alerted about the match.

PSG won the match by a scoreline of 6-1 and were up 5-0 at one point before Marko Marin got a goal in the second half.

Red Star released a statement (h/t Liverpool Echo) denying the allegations and asking for an investigation.

“FC Red Star with the highest anger and abomination rejects the story L’Equipe published today about suspicious result of the PSG vs Red Star match and involvement of anyone from our club in possible wrong doings.

“The article can harm and bring big damage to our club’s reputation and that is why we insist that UEFA and investigators in Serbia and in France investigate the whole story and get the truth.”

Liverpool face Red Star twice in the Champions League and need to win both games to have a chance of qualification. We lie second in the group with a win and a loss after our opening fixtures.
