Liverpool are linked with Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Matthias Ginter, according to Calciomercato (h/t Mirror
).Jurgen Klopp had previously signed the defender during his time at Borussia Dortmund, and the report claims that the German sees Ginter as a possible replacement for Joel Matip.
The Cameroon defender was signed as a free agent from Schalke and was replaced in the starting XI first by Dejan Lovren and more recently by Joe Gomez.
However, injuries to Lovren and Gomez opened the door for Matip to start more games, and the defender has done a great job recently partnering Virgil van Dijk.
Ginter won the World Cup in 2014, and is just 25, giving Klopp ample time to work on his development. However, the defender hasn’t had a great few weeks with his current club.
Ginter’s team haven’t been in great form recently and Monchengladbach were hammered 5-1 by Bayern Munich.
The German even spoke about the poor performance and claimed Bayern deserved the win (h/t Mirror):
“We made too many mistakes and made it too easy for Bayern,” Ginter told his club’s official website. “They created a lot of chances after they went 3-1 up and deserved to win in the end.”
Monchengladbach are on a four-game winless streak and have conceded 12 goals in those games. They were on a six-game winning streak prior to these four games too.
Ginter could be a decent addition to the Reds as Lovren and Matip haven’t always been consistent for the Reds.
