ESPN reports that Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk wants to sign a new deal with the Champions League winners.
The Dutch defender played a crucial role in our Champions League win this season and is easily one of the best centre-backs in the world.
The former Southampton star signed for the Reds just 18 months ago and helped us finish second in the Premier League too.
The report claims that Van Dijk signed a five-and-a-half-year deal when he joined from the Saints and told the Reds of his desire regarding a new contract before the Champions League final.
Van Dijk’s party and Liverpool are not rushing into the deal and are confident that the new contract will be finalised without any issues, according to the report
.Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson and Jordan Henderson all signed new deals last season, effectively keeping the core of the team for several years.
Extending Van Dijk’s contract should be a no-brainer and this will come as a major boost for the club too.
The centre-back was one of the reasons why we lifted the Champions League last season, and we should be in a great position to win more trophies in the upcoming campaign.
Liverpool will play in several competitions next season, but the main aim has to be to win the Premier League.
