Jurgen Klopp has claimed that only goalkeepers and centre-backs are expected to start every game while the other players will be rotated.
Liverpool won the UEFA Super Cup on penalties and Klopp rotated several players in their win over Southampton at the weekend.
The Reds will play several extra games this season due to their packed schedule and Klopp hinted that many players could be rotated in an attempt to maintain fitness. He was quoted by the Telegraph (h/t Mirror) as saying,
“No football player should play 50 or 60 games a season, especially not in these intense positions.
“Goalie and a centre-half maybe do it but all the rest: give whatever you have and next game maybe somebody else will do the job.
“That’s the plan, but we can only do that if they all stay fit.”
The Reds have already had to replace Alisson in goal due to an injury and Adrian has had a mixed start to his Liverpool career.
Klopp has options to mix his team around when it comes to the defence and midfield, however, he needs to be smart with the attack too.
Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino play at a very high level, and they need to be kept fresh for the majority of the campaign.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise if Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri get some starts when the Champions League campaign begins. Further, we should see Rhian Brewster get some games when the domestic cup competitions start.
It will be interesting to see if Klopp brings in some young players into the first-team after signing Sepp van den Berg and Harvey Elliott in the summer.
