“I wanted to leave” – Senior Liverpool star opens up on failed summer move

Latest Liverpool news: Lovren confirms desire to leave Reds but understands club’s position

Dejan Lovren has spoken out regarding the rumours of his exit from Anfield during the summer.

The Liverpool defender was linked with a move to Italy but ended up remaining at the club (h/t Calciomercato).

The 30-year-old hasn’t featured for the team this season under Jurgen Klopp and the Croatian explained his decision to seek a new club (h/t Liverpool Echo

):

“Yes, I did consider moving, I knew I gave my best for Liverpool, won CL and I am not kind of player that likes to be benched and earn money.

“Some people around me advised me ‘What do you care, you are in big club, shut up take the money’ But I am not happy on the bench.”

The centre-back has fallen down the pecking order due to injuries and the form of our other defenders, but claimed that Jurgen Klopp also told that he needed the Croatian in the team:

“Klopp told me ‘Listen, buddy, you are top class player, we will not let you go on loan. We need you.’

“I wanted to leave, it didn’t happen, I was told Liverpool needs me and I accepted that.”

Lovren will get his chance to play

The Croatian is right in suggesting that he might not play too many games this season but he will get his chances on the pitch.

The Reds play a lot of cup competitions this season and will need to rotate their centre-backs too.

Virgil van Dijk cannot be expected to play every game this season while Joel Matip and Joe Gomez have been rotated as his partner.

Gomez could also get a few games at right-back and Lovren should play in the domestic cup competitions.

Lovren was one of the first names on Klopp’s team sheet a couple of years ago but the arrival of Van Dijk has changed that.

The Croatian has struggled with injuries over the past two years too and hopefully, he remains fit for the majority of the campaign.
