Liverpool and New Balance’s court battle over who will be the new kit providers for next season has started.
The Athletic (h/t Mirror) reports that Nike are willing to pay £30million per season to the Reds.
The Merseyside giants want to sign a new deal with the American giants ahead of the new season, however, New Balance triggered a matching clause in their contract, which would see them keep the Reds as their client (h/t Mirror
).Winning the league bags them £2m while the Reds will also be handed “royalties of 20% of all net sales of merchandise, £2m worth of licensed products per season, and a 19% discount on standard wholesale prices.” (h/t Mirror)
The report adds that although the flat fee from Nike is £30m, which could grow up to £70m per year. The Premier League leaders will also be handed other bonuses, with £4m available if they land the Champions League (h/t Mirror).
The total package could blow New Balance’s current deal, which is worth only £40m a season (h/t Mirror).
Distribution has always been a problem for New Balance as their presence in some countries isn’t that great.
Nike are one of the biggest brands in the world and they might not have that problem. The giants have pledged to sell the club’s kit in 6,000 stores and have spent £4.5m on material for next season’s merchandise (h/t Mirror).
It will be interesting to see which side wins this battle, but the report claims that New Balance are unlikely to match what Nike have to offer.
Our current kit manufacturers have done a decent job, but we have become one of the biggest clubs in the world now and it could be time to tie up with a bigger sports apparel company.
