A 2-0 loss to a Jose Mourinho team in the midst of a title charge. This is a sentence that has haunted Liverpool fans for six long years since that fateful loss at Anfield in 2014.
The baton seems to have been passed on to Pep Guardiola as Mourinho returned the favour with a typical smash and grab against a Manchester City side that dominated for large swathes of the match.
In the aftermath of the match, Guardiola seemed less than graceful in defeat as he seemed to take a swipe at Liverpool’s success this season. (h/t Guardian
)In 2018, the competition’s chief executive Richard Scudamore angered Manchester City when he appeared to suggest that the Blues’ runaway triumph was not good for the league. Guardiola now called into question the same argument and if it applied to Liverpool given our 22-point gap at the top.
The comments seemed to be in poor taste as it’s the inability of a star-studded Manchester City to keep up with Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool that has led to this mammoth point difference.
Manchester City are an excellent footballing side who have been consistently funded better when compared to their rivals. They have come up against a Liverpool side who have both the skill and mental fortitude to compete against them. Rather than give credit where it is due, it looks as if Guardiola is more keen on deflecting blame for their lack of performances.
Liverpool need just 18 points from the last 13 games to secure the title. Manchester City now face the real possibility of having to give the Reds a guard of honour when they face each other at the Etihad. It is enough to rattle any City fan given the hotly contested clashes between the pair over the years.
Liverpool fans on Twitter were not impressed by Guardiola’s tirade and took to the social platform to let their feelings known.
