Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes the Reds were hampered by the lack of creativity from midfield in the 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg.
The former Liverpool defender made this admission while talking to Viasport (h/t Metro), after the game. Carragher stated that Liverpool got off to the worst start possible by conceding early in a big game. He admitted that the Reds, to their credit, did not get frustrated, but then neither were they able to turn the tie around.
Touching upon the midfield, Carragher believes the lack of creativity in the midfield is a big problem.
“They don’t have real creativity, certainly in midfield. That’s always been a problem.”
The 42-year-old praised Atletico’s defensive display and commended Liverpool for keeping their temperament. He feels Jurgen Klopp’s side showed good discipline to keep the scoreline at 1-0 while also keeping all 11 men on the pitch.
Carragher has expressed his confidence in Liverpool’s ability to turn the tie around at Anfield. By keeping the score at 1-0, the Reds have kept themselves in the tie as the return leg at home beckons.
Liverpool have not lost a European match at Anfield under Klopp. Our last loss in any competition at home came against Chelsea in September 2018 in the EFL Cup. Klopp has channelled the power of the Anfield crowd during his tenure and will look to do so once more in the return leg on 11th March.
A concern for Liverpool will be the injury sustained by Jordan Henderson. The Reds skipper limped off with ten minutes remaining with what appears to be a hamstring issue. The injury is not thought to be serious, although the Reds will wait for further reports. (h/t Mirror)
