Barcelona will have to pay £225m to prise Liverpool star away, thanks to Coutinho clause

Barcelona will have to pay Liverpool £225m to sign Sadio Mane

The Philippe Coutinho transfer has not gone well for Barcelona. Not only has the former Liverpool star failed to meet the expectations but they now might need to take a significant hit in his valuation.

The after-effects of the deal would be even more troublesome for the Catalans. The Spanish giants will have to pay an eye-watering £225million

for Sadio Mane, according to the Mirror (h/t Daily Mail).

A clause inserted into the Coutinho deal ensures Barcelona will have to pay an extra £89 million above the market value for any Reds player. This premium has been signed for a period of three years, set to last till 2021.

The Coutinho deal has proven very costly for Barcelona

According to transfermarkt (h/t Daily Mail), Mane is valued at £135 million. The premium ensures that Barcelona will have to pay at least £225 million if they want to prise the player before 2021.

Strong hand against a regular foe

The clause ensures Liverpool has a strong hand while dealing with the Catalans. The Nou Camp has proved to be a favourite destination for some of Liverpool’s elite South American talents.

Javier Mascherano jumped ship in 2010 before Luis Suarez forced a move in 2014. With Coutinho having done the same four years later, adding the clause was a smart step.

Liverpool today are European champions and one of the best footballing sides in the world. Players today do not need to leave for the riches of the Nou Camp to win trophies. Under Klopp, the Reds are now a destination rather than a stepping stone.

As Klopp put it eloquently to Coutinho

“Stay here and they will end up building a statue in your honour”.
