Former Manchester United star Steve Bruce is not a favourite on Merseyside. His latest suggestions, however, will find backers as it will directly help our cause as champions-elect.
With the coronavirus pandemic spreading across the world, all football in England has been suspended at least until April 30. The earliest that teams could return to action will be May 2, although that is far from certain.
While some have called for the season to be declared null and void, Bruce, now the Newcastle United manager, has called for a football festival.
“We have to try and get this season finished, whatever that takes”
According to the Telegraph (h/t Liverpool Echo), the Magpies boss has called for a football extravaganza where games take place every day. According to Bruce, teams will play two to three times every week as they attempt to bring the curtains down on the current season.
“We can have a Festival of Football month, games every day, teams playing two or three games a week.”
His comments will be welcomed by Liverpool fans who would be desperate to see the season come to a close. The Reds are currently 25 points clear at the top.
We need just six more points to secure our first league title in thirty years. Having put up an extraordinary set of performances, it will be a grave injustice to see us denied the title.
The Newcastle boss is the first manager to come out publicly with his opinion after the suspension of the league. Although it is not the ideal solution, Bruce insists games can be scheduled to be completed in December and January.
Although it will delay the start of the new season, he says that by cancelling a cup competition and the winter break, it would become manageable.
It will be very unfair to have the season cancelled considering the effort we have put in. Although other matters take priority now, there is no reason why the league cannot start from where it left off. If Bruce, a former Manchester United star and a longtime rival can see it, then so should others.
