Liverpool legend picks his team of the season and there are hardly any surprises

Liverpool players dominate Jamie Carragher’s team of the season

Pundits are usually slated for being biased towards their former teams while making assertions and comparisons. Had it been any other season the same charge could be levied on Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher.

Writing in his column on The Telegraph, the Sky Sports pundit’s team of the year is studded with Reds stars. Given the season we have had, it would be a travesty if anyone didn’t think if this was the case.

Although football on the pitch has come to a standstill at least until May. This is usually the time where the Professional Footballers’ Association selects its team of the season and overlook votes cast for Player of the Year.

With the process this year likely to be delayed, Carragher has gone ahead and published what he believes is the class of 2019-20. The list is dominated by Liverpool stars who occupy seven of the 11 positions.

Liverpool’s full-back duo was a shoo-in for Jamie Carragher

A red wall!

First on the list is Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back. Although Leicester’s Ricardo Periera and Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka have both enjoyed good seasons it’s hard to look past the Liverpool star who has notched up 12 assists this season. Carragher has also backed Trent for the Young Player of the Year award.

It is a similarly easy choice on the other flank with Andy Robertson. The Scotsman is the undisputed choice at left-back and is the best in the league in his position. Having scored seven assists, he is lagging behind only Trent.

The Reds duo of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez also get the nod at centre-back to complete a Liverpool back four. Given the Reds’ impressive defensive record, it comes as no surprise to see us dominate the defensive spots.

Much deserved credit

The only Liverpool midfielder to make the cut was skipper Jordan Henderson. Carragher admits it is good to see the player get the credit he has deserved for years. He went on to credit the skipper for his role in Liverpool’s rise to the top.

Jordan Henderson is the only Reds midfielder to make the cut

There were no surprises upfront as the Liverpool duo of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah made the cut. Although Carragher admits he believed it was a choice between Raheem Sterling and Salah, we believe he made the right call. For all his quality, Sterling has underperformed this season.

Others selected include Sheffield United’s Dean Henderson, Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish and City striker Sergio Aguero.

Carragher has selected quite a formidable team that has done justice to the players who have performed this season. We will have to wait and see how many of them make it to the official Team of the season.
