Impressive Liverpool youngster backed to step up as Lallana’s replacement next season

Curtis Jones backed to replace the outgoing Adam Lallana

According to Josh Williams of the Analyzing Anfield Podcast (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool already have the perfect replacement for outgoing midfielder Adam Lallana – Curtis Jones.

The 19-year-old has progressed through the ranks at the Academy and is held in high regard at Anfield. He could be set to play a bigger role next season following the departure of the veteran Englishman.

Jones has enjoyed a breakout season of sorts and has impressed. He has made nine appearances so far and has scored twice and assisted once for the Reds.

Captain of the Liverpool Under-23s, he also gained the distinction of being the youngest player to lead the first-team out. He managed this in the FA Cup replay against Shrewsbury Town at Anfield.

“We’ve got a kid who has got that quality”

Lallana has been a jack of all trades at Liverpool but injuries have spoiled what could have been a defining role under Jurgen Klopp. The 31-year-old was a key member of the squad in the German’s first few months at the club.

Persistent injuries have prevented him from playing a more proactive role since. He nevertheless remains a key member of the Reds squad. With his contract expiring this summer, Lallana is likely to move on to new pastures.

Lallana is in the last months of his Liverpool contract

Willams has backed Jones to fill the void left by Lallana next season. He has complimented the youngster’s attacking trait as a welcome addition to a rather rigid Liverpool midfield.

“He needs to become a little bit more disciplined in his decisions – and I think he will. He’s naturally a little more attacking and will take risks.”

Lallana has played a rotational role in the squad this season. It would be logical to let Jones take up a similar role to ease him into the side.
