Liverpool failed in an attempt to sign Brazilian starlet Rodrygo while he was still in Brazil with Santos. This is according to the player’s agent.
Nick Arcuri, the player’s agent revealed on the Canal do Nicola Youtube Channel (h/t Mirror) that Jurgen Klopp was keen to sign his client when he was still 16. He also claimed that the German made a trip to Brazil to see the youngster in action.
Arcuri’s claims are on the back of a phone call from a Liverpool director, who informed him that both Klopp and the club were aware of Rodrygo’s talents.
He went on to claim that the Liverpool boss became aware of the player’s existence after searching for Brazilian talents on youtube.
“They contacted me, the Liverpool director wanted him to be his first signing”
Arcuri took Liverpool’s offer to the Santos president, who promptly rejected it. The Brazilian side was not keen on selling their gem and wanted him to sign a professional contract with them instead.
The player would eventually go on to sign for Real Madrid in 2018. He would spend the season on loan at Santos before joining up with the Galacticos in 2019.
Rodrygo has impressed at the Bernabeu and scored a hat-trick in their 6-0 Champions League win over Galatasaray. He is the second youngest to achieve this feat in the tournament. He also gained the distinction of being the first player born in the 21st century to score
in the Champions League.Still just 19, he has made 21 appearances for Real and has scored nine goals and two assists. Impressive stats for a youngster in his first season in Europe. His performances have seen him called up for the Brazilian senior side, for whom he has made two appearances.
Liverpool look to have missed out on a proper star in Rodrygo. It is unclear if any of the incidents Arcuri claims took place for real. The Reds have improved their scouting in the past few years and if anything, it is a testament to that improved faculty.
