A recent report by the Marca (h/t Liverpool Echo), is claiming that Liverpool are among a host of top Premier League clubs chasing the signature of highly-rated La Liga defender Diego Carlos.
Liverpool’s current defensive situation isn’t the most comfortable one. And it hasn’t come as too much of a surprise that the club are being name-dropped all over the continent. The latest link to have come up has touted us to make a big-money move for Sevilla’s centre-half Carlos this summer.
The 27-year-old is said to have a release clause in the region of £67m – a figure that will surely be beyond our reach this summer. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
The fee could come as the biggest stumbling block to a majority of the suitors though, as the sheer amount of inflation in the football market right now is inexplicable.
The La Liga outfit are reportedly looking to depend on player sales to find some new acquisitions, with Carlos being viewed as one of the dispensable members in the roster. Their desire to cash in on the Brazilian could explain the links to the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City, along with Liverpool. (h/t Liverpool Echo)
The player’s contract with Sevilla does possess a mammoth release clause. However the Spanish side are said to be willing to accept a big enough offer. (h/t Liverpool Echo
)Liverpool just have just Joel Matip and Joe Gomez available as options alongside Virgil van Dijk. So, we need another senior centre-half brought in before the start of the season. Going into a new season with just three senior defenders to choose from though, could end up being footballing suicide.
However, the likelihood of Klopp sanctioning such a big-money deal is looking extremely bleak.
Carlos stands at over 1.85m tall and has got the physicality required to tackle the gritty nature of English football. Despite making quite the reputation for himself, Carlos is yet to make his debut for the national side. Worryingly, he hasn’t represented Brazil at any of the youth levels either.
Despite all this, there’s no need to question the defender’s quality on the back of the season he has had. Our biggest concern on this regard will almost surely be the La Liga outfit’s asking price.
