Ben Woodburn set for Sparta Rotterdam loan stint

According to the Evening Standard, Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn is set to join Dutch Eredivisie outfit Sparta Rotterdam on a season-long loan deal.

The 20-year-old Woodburn has been regarded as one of the brightest prospects to have come through the Liverpool youth setup in recent years. The versatile forward announced himself on the biggest stage when he scored in an EFL Cup tie against Leeds United in 2016, to become the club’s youngest ever goalscorer.

However, the Welshman’s career has failed to kick off from that point, with serious injuries derailing his development to quite an extent.

The 20-year-old’s loan spell at Sheffield United during 2018/19 had to be cut short in January, while last season, he endured an injury-riddled spell at Oxford United. Indeed, Woodburn broke both his feet in separate incidents while on loan with the Us last season.

Now, he will get another chance to get his career back on track in the Netherlands, where he is set to join Sparta Rotterdam on a season-long loan deal. He heads to the club after recommendation from Liverpool’s assistant coach Pep Lijnders. (h/t Evening Standard

Woodburn is a special talent, who has been very unlucky with injuries over the past year or so. A move to Sparta Rotterdam, where is likely to feature regularly, should do the youngster a world of good.

Woodburn is not the only Liverpool youth star likely to leave on loan this summer. Sheyi Ojo has already joined Cardiff City on a temporary deal, while goalkeeper Kamil Grabara is also set for an exit. Rhian Brewster, too, could follow suit, although there is still a lack of clarity on the Englishman’s situation.
