Conor Coady, the captain of Wolverhampton Wanderers, laughed off suggestions regarding a possible return to Liverpool.
The 27-year-old came through the youth ranks at Liverpool but didn’t get too much playing time. He was sent on loan to Sheffield United before signing permanently with Huddersfield Town in 2014.
However, his real calling came at Wolverhampton, who he joined just a year later. Coady helped the Wolves return to the Premier League and the captain has been ever-present in the heart of their defence.
The 27-year-old was speaking to the Sky Sports team after Wolves’ win over Leeds United and Jamie Carragher put him on the spot. The ex-Liverpool star claimed that Jurgen Klopp had named Coady as one of those who could replace the injured Virgil van Dijk.
Coady, however, wasn’t going to fall into the trap and laughed off the suggestion of a return:
“I can’t believe you have just put this to me here! No, not at all.”
The 27-year-old added that he was happy at Wolves and wanted to speak about the performance by his teammates.
While Coady’s form for Wolves has seen him make his England debut too, Liverpool have to think about their January plans.
Van Dijk is expected to be out for a long time and we cannot go into the rest of the season expecting Joe Gomez and Fabinho to play each game.
Not signing a replacement after Dejan Lovren left was always going to be a risky strategy, and it seems to have hit us now.
Van Dijk is a leader in defence and replacing him is difficult. However, the Reds can soften this blow by signing a decent centre-back in the winter window.
Coady has been one of the most consistent performers for Wolves, and it will be interesting to see if we do make a move for a centre-back in January.
