A report by The Mirror states that Liverpool have already made a formal offer for Lille playmaker, Jonathan Ikone, for a move in the summer transfer window.
The offer is said to be around £40million. Jurgen Klopp is an admirer of the attacking midfielder and wants him as a solution to the lack of goals from his team’s midfield this season.
The 2020/21 campaign had a ton of injuries in store for Liverpool’s defence. But their strikers up front were not really helping the cause further.
Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane were not at their goal-scoring best while goals and assists from midfield were scarce. And Ikone can be a solution to that problem.
He has scored 7 times and provided 7 assists for Lille this season, where they have trumped PSG to win the Ligue 1 title. The 23-year-old is in demand after playing a major part in the club’s iconic title run.
The Reds are also on the verge of losing Georginio Wijnaldum. The Dutchman is out of contract in the summer and is on the verge of signing for Barcelona
.In light of this, it becomes evident that Klopp would look for solutions to fill in the void left behind by the former Newcastle United midfielder. And Ikone can be a good solution considering his age and versatility.
The Frenchman is just 23 and can play in a variety of positions in the midfield and on the wings. Ikone has come through the youth system of PSG and finally left the club after failing to make a mark at Parc des Princes in 2018, when he joined Lille.
The report also mentions that there is also talks of a £25million plus Xherdan Shaqiri offer being tabled by Liverpool for Ikone. But it remains to be seen if the Reds can sign Ikone, a player hugely valued by Lille after his great season.
