Transfer News: Outgoing Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum reveals reason for choosing PSG over Barcelona

Speaking in an interview (h/t The Mirror), outgoing Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum revealed that speedy negotiations helped him choose PSG over Barcelona as his next club.

The Dutchman has left the Reds after failing to renew his deal at the club. Wijnaldum, who spent a number of years under Jurgen Klopp and helped Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League, is now a PSG player.

And he revealed that quick negotiations and the clarity of the project were the reasons why he opted to go with Paris Saint-Germain as his next club.

“It was a difficult choice. We negotiated with Barcelona for 4 weeks, but we did not reach an agreement. PSG were just quicker and their project spoke to me more. To be honest, I thought I was joining Barcelona because at the beginning they were the only interested club.”

The 30-year-old midfielder went on to add that he would have liked to play at both clubs but he wanted to choose his next destination before the start of the Euros.

“PSG and Barcelona are both truly great clubs, and both are clubs where I would have liked to play. I wanted to make my decision before the start of the Euros and in the end, I chose PSG.”

Wijnaldum will be earning around £8.6million per year at PSG and has penned a three-year deal at the club, according to De Telegraaf (h/t The Mirror). Liverpool will surely miss his presence in midfield.
