Liverpool linked with Serbian star as Klopp eyes a replacement for Wijnaldum

Transfer News: Liverpool linked with Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic

According to Italian news outlet Il Messaggero (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are keen on bringing in Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Anfield from Lazio.

The Serbian midfielder could be the replacement for the outgoing Georginio Wijnaldum, who did not renew his deal at Anfield and is now at Paris Saint-Germain.

However, the report mentions that it would take a ‘monstrous offer’ to land the former KRC Genk midfielder. The 26-year-old impressed this season with 8 goals

and 11 assists in all competitions for the Serie A outfit.

It is evident that Liverpool would need to replace Wijnaldum one way or the other. He was an ever-present in Jurgen Klopp’s injury-hit side last year and his departure would naturally leave a void to be filled.

’21 Savic

Savic could be a great capture in that regard. At 26, he has a lot of footballing years still left in him and could be a great replacement for the Dutchman in the middle of the park.

He has spent 6 seasons at Lazio and in that time, has gathered 21 caps for his national team. Liverpool do have a decent crop of midfielders when it comes to squad depth.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic is linked with a transfer move from Lazio to Liverpool.

However, a big chunk of them, including the influential trio of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, and Thiago Alcantara missed games due to fitness problems this season. And the German manager should be prepared in case of a repeat of this situation.

That is not to say that Savic would be a backup option. He can come in a challenge for starts straightaway, thereby increasing competition within Liverpool’s midfield.
