Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur tipped to enter Lorenzo Pellegrini race with Liverpool

According to a report by Italian news outlet La Repubblica (h/t Liverpool Echo), Tottenham Hotspur could enter the pursuit for AS Roma midfielder and Liverpool transfer target Lorenzo Pellegrini.

The Italian midfielder has impressed at AS Roma during his four-year stay at the club. And this season, the 24-year-old chipped in with 9 goals and 11 assists from midfield.

So with Georginio Wijnaldum joining PSG as a free agent, it is understandable why the Reds have been linked with Pellegrini. However, they could now see competition from Spurs.

The report mentions that Paulo Fonseca, who is touted to be the new Tottenham boss, is a fan of the midfielder and can make a ‘swoop’ for him in the summer, granted he takes over the managerial helm at N17.

Pellegrini, who also has 17 caps for his national team, can be a suitable replacement in the midfield for the outgoing Wijnaldum. Even the money quoted for him is not exorbitant.

The £25.8million release clause in his contract seems sensible considering his age as well as his capacity to add depth to a team’s midfield. With Liverpool more well-versed about injury issues after what happened this season, cover in the midfield is needed.

It remains to be seen if the interest from either club is genuine and can be formalized at a later stage. But with the absence of Wijnaldum and James Milner’s contract expiring next year, Klopp should consider bringing in someone in midfield.
