Portugal and Germany faced each other in a titanic Group F match at UEFA Euros 2020 on Saturday, and it was Liverpool forward, Diogo Jota, who starred for his team. (h/t BBC)
The game got off to a great start for Portugal as they took a 1-0 lead. Jota laid it on a plate for Cristiano Ronaldo to score the opening goal of the game in the 15th minute.
However, a pair of own goals from their defenders saw Fernando Santos’ side go 2-1 down at half-time. Manchester City defender Ruben Dias, and Raphael Guerreiro were the culprits.
Germany’s Kai Havertz scored six minutes into the second half after a peach of a cross from Robin Gosens. It was an uphill task from there for the 2016 Euro champions.
The task went from improbable to impossible when Gosens turned from provider to scorer in the 60th minute with a header. However, there was still time for Jota to score his first goal at the tournament.
Ronaldo returned the favour with a dinked ball into Jota’s feet, who had the easy task of turning it into the empty net. Both Ronaldo and Jota were exquisite for the losing side but their teammates were of little help.
After a bland showing from Jota in Portugal’s 3-0 win against Hungary in the opening group game for Portugal, Liverpool fans were over the moon seeing their star forward make his mark on the Euros.
Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and City’s Ruben Dias were below par in the defeat, which made Jota’s performance all the more sweeter for Reds fans.
