“Sit back with the popcorn”: Liverpool legend reacts to Rafa Benitez joining Everton

Jamie Carragher has his say on Rafael Benitez taking over at Everton

Speaking on talkSPORT (h/t Liverpool Echo), former Liverpool defender and club legend Jamie Carragher has reacted to Rafael Benitez becoming the new Everton manager.

The 61-year-old Benitez enjoyed a memorable six-year stint at Anfield between 2004 and 2010. The Spanish tactician led Liverpool to one of the most iconic moments in the club’s history in 2005 – the UEFA Champions League triumph in Istanbul.

Benitez also went on win an FA Cup during his time at Anfield. After having left the Red half of Merseyside, the former Valencia coach went on to have stints with Inter Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Newcastle United and Chinese Super League outfit Dalian Pro.

However, in a bit of a controversial move, Benitez has now taken over as the Everton boss, despite his past allegiances with Liverpool. The Spaniard replaces Carlo Ancelotti, who ended up returning to Real Madrid earlier this summer.

And, Carragher, who was a regular in the side during Benitez’s time at Anfield, has reacted to this development, saying

:

“It is one of those ones where I will just sit back with a popcorn and watch it all unfold.”

Earlier in the month, Carragher had backed Benitez for the job in his column for The Telegraph (h/t Liverpool Echo), while claiming that it would be one of the “most shocking appointments in Merseyside football history.”

More Liverpool News:

Without a doubt, it is certainly a controversial appointment, one which has already sparked some serious negative reactions

within the Everton fanbase.

As Carragher says, you’ve just got to sit back and watch it all unfold in the coming weeks.
