As confirmed on the club’s official website, Liverpool midfielder Marko Grujic has completed a transfer to Portuguese giants FC Porto on a permanent basis.
The Serbian midfielder was the first signing made by Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, with the club signing him in January 2016 for a £5.1m fee. But things haven’t gone to plan to since then.
Grujic has failed to make a mark on Klopp’s first team. Instead, his time as a Liverpool player is marked by a number of loan spells, with the most recent one being at FC Porto.
Before that, Grujic enjoyed temporary stays at Hertha Berlin as well as Cardiff City. But after more than 5 years, the Reds have offloaded him permanently, for £10.5m.
The official Liverpool website has confirmed the former Red Star Belgrade midfielder’s departure. An excerpt from their farewell statement for Grujic reads:
“Grujic joined up with Klopp’s squad for this month’s pre-season training camp in Austria and will now bid farewell to link up with Porto permanently. Everyone at Liverpool FC thanks Marko for his contributions to the club and wishes him the best in his future career.”
Georginio Wijnaldum departed the club earlier in the summer but while the team could have used a replacement for the Dutchman, Grujic was not the man.
Klopp has had him for more than 5 seasons at the club and never once chose to hand him regular Premier League starts. On that note, a transfer away from Anfield seems like a good move for all parties.
And the aforementioned sum that the Reds would receive for Grujic is also boosted by the fact that the Reds have also managed to insert a 10% sell-on clause in his contract.
