FSG make a decision on Liverpool’s summer that may not please the fans

FSG to hold off until 2022 to freshen up the Liverpool squad

According to The Express, Fenway Sports Group (FSG) look set to wait until the summer of 2022 to revamp the Liverpool squad.

The Reds endured a difficult campaign last season and could only salvage it late in the campaign following a run of wins. Jurgen Klopp’s side will be keen to avoid such a misadventure and get the work done as quickly as possible.

Liverpool have signed Ibrahima Konate this summer. Who else follows the Frenchman in through the door remains to be seen.

FSG believe that the transfer market, currently affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, will return to full health next year. With general finances at the club level expected to improve, it could prove easier to get our business done.

The likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will also enter their thirties, making youth reinforcements a priority. For now, however, the aim is to retain our best players. The likes of Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah will enter the final two years of their contracts and a decision will need to be made.

The Reds have been linked with a number of players including Saul Niguez, Renato Sanches, Florian Neuhaus and Youri Tielemans. Any move, however, is yet to take shape and it could indicate at the club having a quiet summer this year.

Both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will have just a year to go on their current deals at the end of next season. This could put them directly in the firing line of the squad revamp.

While the financial implications are understandable, Liverpool cannot afford to stand still. The likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and even Arsenal are adding to their squad while Liverpool have so far landed just Konate.

While FSG may be earnest in their efforts for next summer, we could very well miss out on an opportunity this time around by being too patient. Jurgen Klopp has brought much to Merseyside and rebuilding this Liverpool side could prove to be his biggest challenge.
