Transfer News: Taiwo Awoniyi completes Union Berlin move from Liverpool

As confirmed on the club’s official website, Liverpool have completed the sale of striker Taiwo Awoniyi to German side, Union Berlin on a permanent transfer.

The Nigerian forward’s time as a Liverpool had been marred by troubles related to getting a work permit. Due to that, he was loaned out several times ever since he joined the Reds.

He joined the Reds in 2015 and was immediately loaned out to FSV Frankfurt in Germany before going to NEC Nijmegen the following year. A loan spell at KRC Genk was sandwiched between two seasons at Mouscron in Belgium.

For the past two seasons, he has been in Germany with Mainz 05, and most recently, Union Berlin. And now, Die Eisernen have made his stay in Germany permanent from this season, having completed the transfer for a £6.5m fee.

Awoniyi close to Union Berlin move

Unfortunately for the Ilorin-born striker, he never represented Liverpool at any level. Considering that statistic, getting any fee for Awoniyi this summer is a bonus, and it can then be utilized towards any potential incomings.

It’s a shame for Awoniyi, however, considering there could have been a real chance for him to get some time in a Liverpool shirt.

Roberto Firmino’s underwhelming goal-scoring form and Jurgen Klopp’s unwillingness to regularly feature Divock Origi could have handed him some minutes for the club. But there is no doubt that he would see more action for Union Berlin next season.

Awoniyi was on loan at the same club last season and made 21 Bundesliga appearances for them. The 23-year-old can now hope for a fresh start away from Anfield, if and when a permanent move is finalized for him this summer.
