According to Fichajes (h/t Daily Star), Premier League rivals Arsenal are currently ahead in the race to sign Liverpool summer transfer target Marco Asensio.
The 25-year-old Spaniard, who is currently on duty for Spain at the Olympics, suffered for game-time at Real Madrid last season. Although Asensio did feature in 35 La Liga games for Madrid, he had less than 2000 minutes on the pitch, and the winger would want increased game-time this season.
However, Real Madrid would now be ready to let go of Asensio this summer for a fee in the range of £34million. Liverpool, who have been on the lookout for forwards this, summer would be interested in signing the winger to add more depth to their frontline.
The Reds currently face the prospect of losing the likes of Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, while Liverpool could also lose Mo Salah and Sadio Mane for nearly a month next January during the Africa Cup of Nations.
Thus, Liverpool would need substantial, and quality depth in their frontline – something Marco Asensio could provide to the Reds. Featuring on the right-wing more often than not, Asensio could be a direct deputy to Mo Salah while he could also facilitate Jurgen Klopp to play in a 4-2-3-1 system.
Although Asensio contributed to only 7 La Liga goals last season, he has previously shown his quality and can provide valuable depth to Liverpool. However, it is Arsenal that are now in the driver’s seat for his signing.
While Arsenal do lead
the race to sign the winger, Liverpool could provide Asensio with the prospect of Champions League football, something the Gunners cannot.
