Liverpool fans react as Jake Cain completes loan transfer to Newport County

Liverpool have announced on their official website that Jake Cain will join Newport County on a season-long loan until next summer.

The 19-year-old midfielder trained with Jurgen Klopp’s men during the recent pre-season, but it was always going to be difficult for him to carve out a place for himself in the starting XI.

Cain joined the club as a nine-year-old and has steadily progressed to represent the reserve teams. He made his senior debut against Shrewsbury Town in the 2019/20 FA Cup.

And a few months after that, he signed a long-term contract with the Reds in the summer of 2020. It’s safe to say that the teenager hasn’t looked like troubling the current midfield pecking order under Jurgen Klopp.

Cain off to Newport

Georginio Wijnaldum might have left the club to join PSG, but Klopp has seen Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita enjoy an injury-less start to the campaign so far.

Moreover, the German manager trusted Curtis Jones with minutes last season and 18-year-old Harvey Elliott seems to be one of Klopp’s preferred options in midfield during the start of this campaign.

Amidst this, Cain would not have seen much time on the green grass for the senior side. Newport County play in League 2, the fourth-tier of English football and finished 5th in the table last season.

However, with a lack of incomings ever since the club signed Ibrahima Konate early in the window, Liverpool fans have been left somewhat frustrated. Their reactions to Cain’s move made for some interesting reading.

While it’s harsh for the teenager to be the focus of attention for frustrated fans, the reactions from some of the fans reflect a general feeling amongst the fanbase that feels the club could have been more active in this window, especially when it came to signing players.
