“Takes people on”: Ex-Reds hero backs 20-year-old Liverpool starlet to play in a more attacking role

Former Liverpool winger believes Curtis Jones should play in a more advanced position

According to Liverpool Echo, Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman believes a change in position for Curtis Jones could help him get more first-team action. Curtis Jones was heavily featured in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool team last season but is yet to feature in the Premier League since the opening day fixture.

Jones made 34 appearances for the Reds and scored 4 goals in all competition last campaign. The 20-year old has grown through the ranks and has become a part of the first team set-up under Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool also rejected

any possible proposals for the player this summer but he is yet to feature in the first team.
Curtis Jones is yet to feature in the Premier League this season.

With the departure of Gini Wijnaldum, Curtis was expected to step up and establish himself as a regular in the first team. But that has not been the case as of now. The young midfielder did not have a smooth start to the season as he suffered a concussion in a pre-season friendly against Osasuna which saw him miss out on the opening day fixture against Norwich City.

Though with a packed schedule for Liverpool Jones might get his fair share of game time with the team. However, Former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman has urged Jurgen Klopp to play the midfielder in a more advanced position. He said:

“Curtis needs to kick on again, just like every player, In the U18s, he was a superstar. U23s, he was a leading goal scorer and best player and had to move up to the first team as he was too good for U23s.

“He just needs to keep on doing that, keep on improving and keep adding to his game. Maybe he needs to play a little bit further forward, and I’d prefer to see that. He takes people on really easily, and I want to see more of that.”

Curtis Jones is expected to be a future star at Anfield.

Maybe Curtis could play in a more advanced position in future, but it will be interesting to see that if Jurgen Klopp makes use of the young midfielder this weekend against Leeds United.

Liverpool will be on the road against Leeds for their upcoming Premier League fixture. With players out due to injury, perhaps Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliot make their mark on the first team provided the Liverpool boss gives them the opportunity to do so this Sunday.
