Report: Liverpool linked with a move for 25-year-old Spanish midfielder

Transfer News: Liverpool eyeing Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are linked with a transfer move for Real Sociedad midfielder, Mikel Merino.

The Reds saw Georginio Wijnaldum leave their ranks this summer as he joined Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1. That was followed by Marko Grujic’s departure and Xherdan Shaqiri’s sale to Olympique Lyon towards the closing stages of the transfer window.

Instead of looking to replace the outgoing trio, Liverpool were motionless when it came to incomings. 21-year-old defender, Ibrahima Konate, ended being our only major acquisition this summer.

But it seems like the Reds are now looking to strengthen their midfield. The report highlights Liverpool’s interest in Merino as a potential replacement for Wijnaldum, but mention that they may have to pay a big fee considering his contract expires in 2025.

Merino to LFC?

Merino has experience playing in various leagues across Europe. Coming through the academy of Osasuna, he was snapped up by Bundesliga giants, Borussia Dortmund.

From there, Merino took his first steps in English football with Newcastle United. However, he left St. James’ Park after making just 25

appearances in all competitions for the club and has been a vital part of Sociedad’s midfield since 2018.

There could well be a slot for him in Liverpool’s midfield. Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara, and James Milner aren’t getting any younger and the Reds are yet to bring in a central midfielder after Wijnaldum’s departure.

Whether the Reds formalize any interest they have in Merino remains to be seen. What we do know is the 25-year-old is arguably in the prime years of his career and would add important squad depth for a team that would be competing for trophies on four fronts.
