Report: Liverpool set to extend seating capacity at Anfield beyond 61,000

Liverpool moving ahead with plans to further extend the seating capacity at Anfield

According to a club statement (h/t The Guardian), Liverpool are set to further expand the seating capacity at Anfield while also incorporating world-class facilities into the legendary arena.

The Reds will officially start working on the project that will expand the seating capacity of their stadium next week. It will add an extra 7,000

seats to the Anfield Road stand. This will take the stadium’s maximum capacity to around 61000.

The Merseysiders will continue to play at Anfield while the work goes on. This will be the latest infrastructural investment FSG have made. They recently helped build the state-of-the-art £50million training facility at Kirkby while also redeveloping the main stand back in 2016.

According to the report, the expansion will see the Anfield Road stand will get a new look. The lower tier will be refurbished whereas a new upper tier will also be created. It will include improved concourses and sports bar lounge hospitality facilities.

Andy Huges, Liverpool’s managing director spoke up on the finer details of the project

“We have been clear from the beginning that in order for this expansion to go ahead we needed the cooperation of local residents and the community, to successfully navigate the complex planning landscape, and to ensure the project is financially viable.”

This expansion was given approval by the Liverpool City Council in June this year. Provided there are no unforeseen delays, the project is set to be completed by the 2023-24 campaign.

The project was given permission after going through two stages of public consultation. The expansion will also offer more employment, helping create 400 new matchday roles.

Anfield will become the third-largest stadium in England once the work is completed. The arena will also become a multi-purpose venue with the ability to host several concerts, providing another source of income for the club
