In conversation with Sky Sports (h/t Express), Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has placed Brendan Rogers on the top of his list to replace Jurgen Klopp after his contract with the Reds gets over.
Klopp has changed the fortunes of this Merseyside team ever since his arrival at Liverpool. The Reds have seen consistent improvements under the German manager who has won a galore of European titles like the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and the Fifa Club World Cup.
He also brought the esteemed Premier League title back to Liverpool after a wait of three decades. Rogers was the predecessor to Klopp and had a roller coaster of a ride with the Merseysiders as they narrowly missed on the title in the 2013-14 season.
A disappointing season after that saw the former Borussia Dortmund manager take over the PL club and restore it to its former glory. The 48-year-old manager then went on to enjoy productive spells with Celtic and Leicester (currently serving).
Carragher had the chance to play under Brendan Rogers and expressed his views about the former Liverpool manager:
“I’m a huge fan of Brendan Rodgers and think he’s a brilliant manager, I really do. I’ve worked with him for 12 months at Liverpool and I think this job came too early for him. If Jurgen Klopp was to leave Liverpool tomorrow Brendan Rodgers would be top of the list.”
The ex-Liverpool ace has tipped the former Celtic manager to take over despite suffering an indifferent spell at Merseyside. Rogers also led Leicester to their first-ever FA Cup title after Youri Tielemans scored an amazing goal to seal the victory for the foxes.
That being said the former Reds defender also highlighted why the Merseyside hierarchy may not view this as the best option right now:
“That’s not going to happen because he’s been here (Liverpool) before – but done a brilliant job at Leicester. It is a bump in the road and I almost feel at Leicester because they’ve fell away at the end it’s almost looked at negatively – ‘Oh the season they threw away the top four’”
The 54-year-old German manager’s contract with the Reds extends until 2024. Klopp would become Liverpool’s longest-serving manager since Bob Paisley if he fulfils his role at the helm till the end of his contract.
The Merseyside team will have to look for potential replacements but it would definitely be difficult to follow in the footsteps of the great German manager who brought so much passion and success to this club.
