European giants ahead of Liverpool in the race for stellar Serie A signing

Transfer Update: PSG are the front runners to sign Liverpool target Frank Kessie

According to Gazzetta Dello Sport(h/t Liverpoolecho), Paris Saint-Germain are leading the race to sign AC Milan star Frank Kessie amid interest from Liverpool.

The Ivorian international is having an enormous impact on the AC Milan side that is challenging for the Serie A title this season. The 24-year-old midfielder has made 19 appearances this season and remains a key member of the Rossoneri side.

Kessie has so far bagged three goals and one assist across all competitions for the Italians. His influential role has also earned him the captain armband albeit not on a permanent basis.

Kessie is currently serving the final year of his contract. The midfielder hasn’t signed a renewal contract yet and Stefano Pioli’s side’s efforts to tie him down to a new deal has hit a roadblock.

It is believed that the Rossoneri offered him a deal worth €6.5m per season. However, the player intends to acquire at least €8m. Thus the contract talks have been stalled between the sides.

Liverpool have been interested in Kessie for some time. However, they face competition from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur and French giants Paris Saint Germain. Now, it is believed that Pochettino’s team have agreed to pay the wage deal Kessie is eyeing.

The Reds has been successful with their usual midfield of Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcântara and Fabinho. However, they are all ageing stars and are not getting any younger.

Thus, there are concerns over the Reds’ long term future. Jurgen Klopp has included Curtin Jones in the mix-up. However, the English youngster is yet to reach a level of dependence and reliability.

On the other hand, Jurgen Klopp has been utilising club captain Henderson at his maximum strength. The English player has been featuring in many games lately amid the absence of key midfielders. Thus, there would be a time when the German manager would need to give him some rest.

Kessie has proved his qualities in Italian League. The midfielder is a leader in the middle for the park and could also influence the performance of the players around him. Jurgen Klopp would use such a player in the middle of the game to win the midfield battle.
