Transfer News: Liverpool among teams keen on 33-goal South American sensation

Liverpool among several clubs interested in signing Benfica striker Darwin Nunez

According to AS (h/t Liverpool Echo), Liverpool are interested in signing Benfica star Darwin Nunez this summer. It is believed that the Reds are among seven clubs that are in the running to secure his services.

The Uruguayan striker has made quite the impression this season. His performances on the pitch haven’t gone unnoticed and shouldn’t be short of any suitors this summer. Nunez put in an exceptional performance against the Merseysiders in the quarter-finals tie of the UEFA Champions League tie this season, scoring in both legs.

Nunez has been exceptional this campaign, bagging 33 goals and four assists in 39 matches

across all competitions for As Águias to date. His exploits have seen him rise in stature and it is understood that the Portuguese club would want nothing short of €100 million for his services. Benfica are hopeful of securing a fee of €130 million.

Nunez to Anfield?

While the Reds do have the feared attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino the club has tried its best to future-proof the attacking lineup. Acquisitions like Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota have helped add that extra sting going forward also providing us with reliable reinforcements.

Nunez could be a great addition to Liverpool and give us more options to choose from in the centre-forward position. While Mane has shown that he is adept at filling in the same position, the imminent departure of Divock Origi means the club could be on the hunt for a new striker.

At 22, the Uruguayan international could be a great acquisition as well as a formidable long-term asset for the club. The Premier League can be a different gravy but considering how well Diaz has adapted to our system there is no reason why Darwin Nunez cannot replicate the same form.

That being said, the huge price tag and interest from other top clubs could be a grave obstacle if we are genuinely interested in signing him. The youngster could cost us a fortune and FSG have been wary of spending huge sums of cash in the past couple of windows.

The club should therefore take all the different factors such as the financial feasibility and club DNA into account before going for a swoop. Liverpool’s recent track record has made us trust their recruitment, and time shall be the best indicator of where the Uruguayan will ply his trade in the future.
