Injury News: Virgil van Dijk hints at return date against Wolves after Leave beat Southampton

Virgil van Dijk has dropped a major hint at a return date from his latest injury after Liverpool saw off Southampton at St Mary’s. The Saints are, of course, the Dutchman’s ex-club but he was not in the squad for the game.

The 30-year-old defender was taken off against Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley, with Joel Matip coming on for him in extra time. After the game, Jurgen Klopp revealed that his injury was not serious and that he should be fit

in time for the UEFA Champions League final.

Now, the former Southampton defender has hinted that he could return in time for Liverpool’s Premier League game against Wolves this weekend. He tweeted after the game:

“BIG WIN! See you all Sunday! [Cool emoji]”

The Reds can do with all the help they can get against Bruno Lage’s side. They need Aston Villa to take points off Manchester City and would themselves have to beat Wolverhampton Wanderers. A draw may not be enough unless Man City lose against the Birmingham-based side by a gigantic margin.

It was a good call by Klopp to rest van Dijk against So’ton. It was an away game which would have seen him travel to Southampton but instead, the Dutchman got time to rest. Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate did a great job at the back.

Van Dijk has been a rock at the back for Liverpool.

The Frenchman was arguably our most impressive player on the pitch alongside goal-scoring hero Takumi Minamino, while Matip scored the winner to hand us all three points. Mohamed Salah and Fabinho were also not in the squad for the game.

Anything but a win yesterday would have seen the weekend game at Anfield become more or less a dead rubber. But now, the Reds are two games of football away from a historic quadruple- and van Dijk will be the key to achieving it.
